Tierney Clark Award for Civil Engineering

You are invited to participate in the competition to win the Tierney Clark Award organised by the ICE Midlands Association, the Chamber of Hungarian Engineers (HCE) and the Association of Hungarian Engineers and Architects (AHCEA). The Award will be given to the best Project regarding the design, preparation, supervision and implementation of civil engineering works.

The deadline for submission of Applications is 03 February 2004.

RULES FOR APPLICANTS

The Tierney Clark Award

Providing that the standard of the submitted projects will be sufficient, two awards are to be given to the projects which satisfy criteria mentioned in this Rules. One award will be presented to projects with a capital value above HUF 300 million and the other to projects with a capital value below HUF 300 million.

The awards (objects):

  • Bilingual (English - Hungarian) Certification with the logos of ICE, HCE and AHCEA with a technical drawing background, with the nomination of the awarded Project, stating the year of the award, with the signatures,
  • A special object for each of the participants, who signed the application

Criteria for entries

Any civil engineering project or precisely defined part of a considerable project may be submitted provided that

  • The location of the project is in Hungary
  • The applicants are:
    • registered by the Hungarian authorities,
    • Hungarian citizens
  • The project has been carried out between 1. January 2002 and 31. December 2003, or possesses a certificate of the fact that the major implementation has been completed by this time.
  • The submitted application complies with the Rules written in this leaflet.

Evaluating Committee

The Evaluating Committee consists of the representatives of the ICE Midlands Association and the representatives of the Hungarian civil engineering organisations.

Judging

The Evaluating Committee will have complete freedom in making decision, including in not presenting any award. They lay emphasis on the quality of design and construction, satisfaction of clients and on the following detailed factors:

  • fitness for purpose, ingenuity, aesthetics,
  • rational management of material and labour,
  • rational project administration, health and safety measures, economy, performance
  • according to the programme,
  • use of innovative and environment-friendly technologies,
  • extremely high quality.

Announcement and presentation of the awarded projects

The place and date of the award ceremony and the exhibition of the winning projects will be announced - around the middle of March 2004 - by a separate notice.


RULES OF ENTRY

1. Entries shall satisfy criteria set out in this leaflet, and shall comprise the following documents in a wallet folder and no way in a form binder. One Hungarian and one English copies are to be submitted.


  • Cover of the wallet folder with nomination of the Project and the applicants.
  • Completed Entry Form
  • The summary made by computer or typewriter cannot comprise more than 500 words on maximum 2 pages of A4 sized paper and shall include an introductory paragraph. The introduction is to explain why the project should be considered to be awarded
  • Detailed information about the aims of the project and the methodology of the Design. It shall explain why the particular technology was chosen and summarise further information which can be significant in the process of decision making.
  • The layout plan shall consist of maximum 6 drawings illustrating the important features and the location of the project and a sketch to make it easier for the judges to find the project from the nearest main road. All documents should be issued or foulded up into A4 size.
  • The application should have 3-6 unmounted colour or black and white photographs. On the reverse the photos are to be captioned and they cannot exceed the A4 size. Transparencies are not acceptable.

2. On the initiative of any member of the Evaluating Committee the implemented projects shall be allowed to be observed.

3. The Evaluating Committee reserves the right to reject any projects which does not satisfy criteria set out in this Rules. It is entitled to present or not to give awards. Result of the decision making process cannot be discussed.
Decisions of the judges are absolute, final and binding on all applicants. No discussion or correspondence concerning decisions will be entered into.

4. The applicants shall accept, that the Hungarian version of those applications reached the
1.-3. positions in the final order - by category - will be given to the possession of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers, while the English version will be given to the possession of the ICE Midlands Association.

5. Entrants of winning projects will be advised confidentially by 30. September 2002.
Any information concerning the results cannot be disclosed until the announcement on 10th October 2002.

Entries should be issued according to the Rules of Entry and sent to: Hungarian Chamber of Engineers1094 Budapest Angyal u. 1-3.

Applications can be delivered until 16:00 03 February 2004, or sent by registered mail with a stamp indicating, that the mail was registered on 03 February.
